Five Free Date Ideas

When Cody and I were newly married we knew we wanted to continue to have regular date nights. If you’ve been following us for a while, you know how much we love investing in our marriage! To us, date nights are a chance to set aside daily tasks and focus on our relationship. Five years into our marriage and we still are trying our best to have a weekly date night! It has been an easy way for us to continue to grow as the years go by. If you haven’t heard our podcast episode about date nights, check it out here!

However, when you think of a date night it’s common to think of going out to eat or doing an activity that costs money. Many couples don’t have regular date nights because they would rather save money, and I totally get that!! Cody and I are very budget conscious so we like to balance spending $$ on dates with date nights that are free. Over the years we have had to be creative when it comes to free date night ideas, and I’m excited to share Five Free Date Night Ideas with you all today!!

One important thing to remember is that date nights don’t have to be extravagant. Especially when you are planning a free date night, I suggest focusing more on having a fun and enjoyable time than crafting a perfect night. Your date could take place during the day, it could last 30 minutes or 4 hours, it is totally up to you! The goal is to spend time connecting with each other apart from other distractions. I hope these 5 ideas give you inspiration for your next date night!

Free Date Idea One: Make a Blanket Fort and Watch a New Movie

When was the last time you did something that really made you feel like a kid?! Cody and I first had this date night when we were dating, and it was so much fun that we’ve repeated it at least once a year! Gather up all the blankets and comforters you own and items you can use to prop up the blankets. In the past we’ve used chairs, tripods, mic stands, literally anything tall haha! Build your fort around your tv, or if you can, put your tv or laptop on the ground and lay sleeping bags and pillows inside the fort to keep you comfy as you watch a movie! Add to the experience by choosing a movie you’ve never seen before or by letting Netflix do the picking for you!

Free Date Idea Two: Play a Board Game or Complete a Puzzle

Dust off those board games you have shoved in the back of your closet and pick a cozy spot in the living room and have a game night! Better yet, try to learn a new game you haven’t played before. After binging the Queen’s Gambit, I made Cody teach me how to play chess. Let’s just say it has been a humbling experience, haha! Game nights can be a fun way to get competitive or to do something out of the ordinary. If board games aren’t your jam, try putting together a puzzle!

Free Date Idea Three: Learn a Viral Dance

I know, you might be thinking that there is no way you would ever learn a viral Tik Tok dance, but hear me out! Learning a goofy dance together can actually be incredibly fun! Unless you’re really into social media, you likely have never tried to learn a viral dance. Doing something new together is a great way to connect and create new memories with each other. Even better, you’ll get to record yourselves doing the dance and you can look back on it when you need a good laugh!!

Free Date Idea Four: Ask Each Other Connecting Questions

One of our favorite ways to connect as a couple is by asking each other meaningful questions. Coming up with meaningful questions on your own can be difficult, which is why we usually look up questions. Cody and I love the book 365 Connecting Questions by Casey and Meygan Caston but you can also try a simple google search and find great lists of connecting questions! I also have recently loved following this account on Instagram, and they post connecting questions weekly and you can find them in their highlights section! Asking questions gives each partner a chance to practice active listening. I promise no matter how long you and your partner have been together you can still learn something new about each other by asking good questions!

Free Date Idea Five: Take a Drive and Play Your Favorite Songs

If you want to get out of the house but don’t want to spend money, consider taking drive while listening to your favorite songs! Cody and I went through a musical phase where we were really into belting songs in the car. Another fun idea is to find your old iPod or mp3 player and listen to all the music you’ve forgotten about! You could also listen to the music on low and focus on having a conversation while you drive. Find an area of your city that you haven’t yet explored and drive without help from the gps (until you need directions home, haha!) Night drives are some of our favorite ways to pass the time together!

I hope this post has given you some inspiration for your next date night! We would love to hear from you if you end up sharing a date night inspired by this post, so feel free to snap a picture and tag us on instagram or facebook!
